ReSPECT information and Webinars

The Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment (ReSPECT) replaced the East Midlands Unified DNACPR form across DCHS, Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Royal Derby Hospital on 25th June. Adoption of the process by GP practices within Derbyshire has been variable and therefore some patients will still have valid decisions about cardiopulmonary resuscitation documented on the red-bordered form. Health and social care professionals working across Derbyshire including primary, secondary, community, care home and ambulance staff have agreed to recognise the legitimacy of both forms of recording decisions about resuscitation status. A legitimate DNACPR form is one that:

·         Clearly states the decision made

·         Indicates if the patient or significant others participated in the decision-making process

·         Indicates the mental capacity of the patient at the time the decision was taken

·         Is signed by a senior clinician (not necessarily a doctor)

·         Is dated.

Training is available throughout October and November via lunchtime webinars to promote general awareness of the ReSPECT process and to provide an overview of the new SystmOne template upon which ReSPECT discussions can be recorded. The webinars also provide a step-by-step guide to completing a form for clinicians whose scope of practice may include initiating advance care planning. These DCHS employees are expected to record the outcome of any resuscitation discussions they initiate on the new lilac ReSPECT form and not on the East Midlands Unified DNACPR form.
