ReSPECT update: For all patient-facing staff
In September we reported that the ReSPECT template had been updated to enable SystmOne users to generate electronic ReSPECT forms within SystmOne Live. Click here for the update. Electronic forms have a slightly different format and most will be printed in black and white. A signed copy of the ReSPECT form should be scanned and uploaded to SystmOne record attachments section, and the original given to the patient.
A recent audit revealed that fewer than 7% patients receiving end of life care or case management for long term conditions in the community had a ReSPECT form recorded in the electronic patient record and less than 10% had a Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) decision documented. This suggests that patients nearing the end of their lives may not have had the opportunity to discuss their advance care preferences with a clinician which could result in inappropriate resuscitation attempts and distress to patients, their families and carers.
For patients who already have a CPR decision documented by their GP or another organisation, please remember to update the CPR Decision section within the SystmOne ReSPECT template in order to flag patients for whom cardiopulmonary resuscitation is not recommended on the care record.
The new SystmOne template also enables staff to record a patient’s preferred place of death.
