Involving the Community in Social Prescribing

Please see the below message from Derbyshire Dales CVS;

I’d like to introduce myself and my colleague Harriet Brown, who will be joining me soon, as Development Workers for the new Social Prescribing service across Derbyshire Dales. We’re really looking forward to meeting you and linking to the fantastic (and very wide ranging!) work of the voluntary sector locally.

What is Social Prescribing?

In a similar way to our previous vSPA project, our local Social Prescribing Development Workers help participants to identify what is important to them and to access activities or support of their choice in their community.  Our local community groups are perfectly placed to give people opportunities to meet and volunteer their time.

How does Social Prescribing help?

We know that stronger links within the community  improve our quality of life by:

·          Reducing loneliness and isolation

·          Improving our physical or mental wellbeing

·          Giving a sense of belonging and being valued

However, there can be a number of barriers that prevent people from getting involved; maybe a lack of information, confidence or transport. Having some practical support through social prescribing can help to break down these barriers. When it’s needed, and if you prefer, we will talk to you about how you can support an individual before letting them know about your organisation.

What support is available for Community Organisations?

We expect that some social prescribing participants will become additional volunteers, helping within local groups.  This is also a good time to remind you that, alongside the social prescribing service,  Derbyshire Dales CVS offers free support for voluntary organisations including:

·          Governance issues

·          Putting together appropriate policies

·          Funding advice

·          Book-keeping and training for new treasurers

·          Managing volunteers

·          Voluntary sector networking events

We would really like to talk to you, find out more about the work of your organisation and tell you more about our plans. We will be at the next Derbyshire Dales CVS networking event at 10am on Tuesday 17 March at the Imperial Rooms, Matlock and hope to see you there.  In the meantime, I have attached a copy of our leaflet.  Please do get in touch any time.

Best wishes,
