Something to shout about - charity work and fundraising for Ashgate Hospicecare

In this edition we caught up with Janet Davies, PA in the people and organisational effectiveness (POE) directorate, to find out all about their charity work and fundraising for Ashgate Hospicecare over the past year. The POE fundraising team have raised an amazing £3839.43 for the charity!

Hi Janet, so tell me about all of the fabulous work the team have been doing to support Ashgate Hospicecare this year?

Well, it all started in 2015 when five of us got together to set up a fundraising committee in POE. Initially we spent a year fundraising for Chesterfield Macmillan Cancer Care Unit, raising £3191.68 in 2015/16. Due to the huge success of our fundraising efforts, we decided we would continue, so we had a vote to decide on the 2016/17 charity - where the whole POE directorate voted for Ashgate Hospicecare.

Like last year our fundraising committee consists of me – Janet Davies, Sue Fletcher, Wendy Ledwidge, Liz McGavin and Clare Moore.

We launched the initiative in April 2016 and after meetings and discussions the fundraising committee agreed to make our main event the summer fayre at the hospice in August. We soon became busy making things to sell on our ‘craft stall’ encouraging donations of home made goods from across the Trust - everything from bird and bug boxes, to jam and knitted goods!

Following on from our success (and the fun we had doing it) we agreed to have a stall at the hospice Christmas market in November (although this wasn’t nearly as much fun due to it being outside on a freezing cold day!). The POE sponsored walk early in September was fortunately blessed with good weather, and the team (and their families) enjoyed a lovely walk around Carsington Water raising a fabulous amount in the process.

We are lucky to have some very energetic members of the team who took on some serious challenges along the way - including Gill doing the Great North Run and a particularly energetic weekend when Rachel completed the Pain Barrier Challenge and a half marathon!

We have also held prize draw raffles in August and again at Christmas, culminating in our fabulous spring prize draw which ran throughout the whole of March and included some great prizes donated by local businesses and our Unison service.

And then of course there is always time for a cake sale…

As the vast majority of the fundraising work has to be done in our own time (lunchtime, evenings and weekends), and other commitments have taken priority, we have now agreed to pass the baton to someone else.
