My DCHS Blog

A cuppa with Beverley Smith

We give a warm welcome to our deputy director of POE and take some time out to catch up with our latest recruit Beverley Smith.
Hi Beverley and welcome to DCHS, what role have you joined us in?

I have joined DCHS as deputy director of people and organisational effectiveness (POE) to undertake a 12 month secondment to cover Jen Guiver’s maternity leave.

Fantastic! How is it going so far?

I was really fortunate to have a mini handover period with Jen for a couple of weeks before her maternity leave started, that was invaluable in getting to know people, understand more about the workings of the organisation and trying to get to grips with the systems and processes. So, I am now a month in and really enjoying the role.

The benefit of working within the POE directorate is that you get to see and speak with colleagues across the whole organisation and I really enjoy that. What strikes me about DCHS is the incredibly helpful and positive attitude that everyone has. I undertook my induction last week with other new starters and lots of people commented on this.

Where did you work before?

I am on secondment from North Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), where I was the chief transformation officer, prior to that I was the assistant director for children’s health commissioning at Derbyshire County Council.

I have previously held a number of senior HR roles in the public sector. My very first job after university, back in the early 80’s (!) was as a careers advisor for young people with special educational needs in Leicester city.

What would you most like to achieve  at DCHS in your role over the next  year?

I think my role over the next year is to support Amanda in steering the POE ship, as Jen would have done. I feel that I am the custodian of her job and need to ensure that the service continues to perform well and responsively.

We need to keep up to date with the very best people practices, work in collaboration with our staff partnership colleagues and ensure we support staff to enable everyone to continue to deliver the very best we can to our patients.
